A few Saturdays ago, Maria invited my kiddos and me (and Tommy) to attend her Saturday morning Tinkergarten class at Belle Haven Park. Having never heard of Tinkergarten, I was immediately intrigued and after some research, incredibly impressed with this organization, and promptly accepted her invitation!
Tinkergarten is on a mission to elevate childhood, through the outdoor experience. Instructors bring families together in a natural place in their community for classes where kids learn through play. Each class becomes a tight-knit group of children and adults who learn together through well-designed, outdoor play-based activities.
The instructor-led classes help kids develop a host of important capabilities, including empathy, collaboration, creativity, persistence and problem solving. Their expert-designed classes and activities help kids ages 6 months—8 years develop core life skills while enjoying healthy, fun, engaging experiences in the physical freedom of local green spaces.
Each class follows a five-part structure that includes a transition time, opening circle, lesson launch, guided play time, and closing circle and snack.
The weather ended up being perfect for the class we attended. It was wonderful to be outside and have the kiddos run around. The class started with some easy stretching and then fun running games to loosen everyone up. Parents could join in if they wanted!
The topic of the class was “Woodpeckers”. The class got a chance to pretend to “woodpeck” themselves by nailing pieces of wood, as Luke is demonstrating below.
To round out the class was snack time with blueberry tea provided (how darling!), some more singing and story time – and some more wood-pecking…
All the parents I chatted with during class couldn’t stop saying wonderful things about Tinkergarten and Maria. They loved having an “organized” class that was outside. A dad remarked that his wife had recently had their second child, so Tinkergarten was a great way for him and their son to get out of the house and do something active, while Mom was with baby sister at home.
Maria – thanks so much for inviting us to your class. Ava and Luke had so much fun!
