Last Saturday my little family and I ventured to the Blossom Kite Festival on the National Mall. This is an annual, cool & family-friendly, and free event that is part of the whole Cherry Blossom Festival celebration. For one reason or another, I hadn’t been able to make it to previous kite festivals, but am so glad we did this year! Everyone had a blast.

We decided that the easiest mode of transportation to the festival would be to ride the metro. By taking the blue line we wouldn’t even have to change lines. I’m not sure, initially, what Ava was more excited about – the fact that she was riding the metro or going to a kite festival.

Our metro ride in was seamless and smooth. We moseyed over to where all the kite-making and kite-flying activities were happening. While supplies lasted, the festival offered free kite-making materials and construction for anyone who wanted to partake in kite flying if they didn’t bring their own kite or didn’t want to purchase kites that were being sold at the festival as well. We fell into the first camp. 🙂

While Ava and I were having kite assembly and decorating fun, Tommy and Luke found a nice spot to on the lawn to hang out.

We enjoyed the next 1.5 hours or so flying Ava’s kite, listening to music, watching synchronized kite-flying performances (I didn’t even know this was a thing!), and just being outside with each other. The weather couldn’t have been better for a kite festival.

We ended our perfect family outing with lunch at The Hamilton, which was a great choice!
