So Tammy and I kind-of did our monthly 14th Street dinner tour on Monday night. Why kind of? Because we actually didn’t eat at a restaurant on 14th Street in DC, but at Hen Quarter in Old Town Alexandria. Let me explain – our gal Christina that makes up our now-trio (refer to Miki’s last dinner post) was seriously sick for the past several weeks (she had to be hospitalized), so while we wanted to honor our monthly dinner, we didn’t want to dine on 14th Street without Christina. So this was Tammy and my compromise, take it or leave it! 😉
I had actually never heard of Hen Quarter, but once I saw the restaurant on Monday night I realized I have driven past it several times.
Hen Quarter is a Dixie-inspired restaurant that pays special homage to Bourbon.
First impressions? The restaurant is HUGE! The first/main floor is the bar area and the upstairs is the more formal, much bigger dining room. I liked the decor of Hen Quarter – it had a rustic, cute southern flair, but not overdone.
Tammy and I decided to share its two signature items:
- Biscuits with Fresh Churned Honey Pearl Butter and Fig Jam. The entire package was delicious, delicious, delicious. The honey and jam were the perfect pairings for the tasty and fluffy biscuits.
- Chicken & Waffles which included a Half Bird, Compressed Watermelon, Cheddar & Corn Waffle, Honey Pearl Butter, Tennessee Bourbon Maple Syrup. We thought the chicken was good, but we weren’t loving the waffle. For some reason we thought each waffle bite we took left a weird aftertaste. I’m wondering if it was due to a spice used in the waffle mixture. I enjoyed the watermelon, but Tammy thought it lacked flavor. Guess you can’t please them all! We both agreed that the syrup was fantastic.
Last but not least what did we choose to drink all the food down with? Sweet Tea of course!
We both agreed that we’d come back to Hen Quarter either for brunch or happy hour. As we were leaving the restaurant we got a glimpse of the Kale & Mango Salad and boy did that look YUMMY.
Christina, we missed you! Lets get our October dinner scheduled pronto.
