Happy Monday folks! Hope everyone had a great weekend. Ours was a hot one in DC, that’s for sure, and the heat wave is supposed to continue throughout this week. I enjoyed a “Mommies Day Out” with my friend, Liz, on Saturday – we went out to brunch and then saw Phantom of the Opera at the Kennedy Center (one of my all-time favorite productions!) and on Sunday we headed over to our good friends’ house, Byrd and Patty, for dinner and a play date with our daughters. Their adorable girl, Bella, is 2.5. It was a great evening!
A few weeks ago I finally went to a local “Japanese Bar Food” restaurant on Mount Vernon Avenue, KAiZEN Tavern, with my friend Arlene. What is Japanese bar food you might ask? Good question – I’d say it’s a cross between Japanese-style tapas. And for this restaurant the Japanese tapas had a mix of Latin fusion. Think sushi and tacos.
Nonetheless I thought the concept, restaurant ambiance, and food were really good. The restaurant itself isn’t a large space by any means, but the owners are able to pack in quite a few people inside and outside on the patio when the weather is nice without it feeling too crowded.
I don’t know why I was surprised, but not only was KAiZEN hopping on a Friday night (we were lucky to snag a table around 6pmish because a few minutes later all the tables were full and a line was forming of people waiting to sit-down), but it was packed with KIDS. I know, I know, Del Ray is a Kids Mecca, but when I first arrived I didn’t immediately think “family dining spot” because of the small space (my little family doesn’t travel light with Ava in tow) and the bar (beautiful and cool as it is) takes about a lot of the said space. But folks with tots and babies were making it work and having a good time, and I was convinced the next time I came, I’d bring Tommy and Ava. 🙂
In true tapas style, Arlene and I decided to order several dishes to share, along with our choice of wine. (It was Friday!)
Great night out with a dear friend. I definitely recommend KAiZEN if you’re wanting a casual, chill place to eat out. Just be aware they don’t take reservations.
