This week’s “Tuesday Tidbits” is devoted to the grand opening of Canal Park and the latest going-ons around the Navy Yard – Ballpark area.
1. This past weekend was the grand opening of Canal Park. Along with a ribbon – cutting ceremony on Friday, the long anticipated ice – skating rink opened to the public. Unfortunately the restaurant, The Park Tavern, that shares the same space with the rink isn’t open just yet. Though I did peak inside this weekend and it looks great. Can’t wait to eat a meal here!
Skaters can practice their sit-spins and triple salchows Monday – Friday, 12pm. – 9pm, Saturday 10am – 10pm, and Sunday 10am – 7pm. Admission is $8 and skate rental is $3.
Here are some photos of people enjoying one of the neighborhood’s new activities:
2. In addition to an ice rink, Canal Park is also a typical park, with plenty of green space to enjoy picnics and outdoor games. There is also a stage for local talent to come out and perform. I also like that there are plenty of benches for people to sit on to chat, enjoy a cup of coffee from nearby Lot 38, eat lunch, or read a book.
3. Another exciting development in the neighborhood is the soft opening of Kruba Thai and Sushi, located at the ground floor of the Foundry Lofts apartment building. (Physical address: 300 Water Street SE). This restaurant is owned by the same owners of Teakwood Thai and Regent Thai in DC. Current hours of operation are Monday – Thursday from 11am – 10pm, Friday 11am – 11pm, Saturday 12pm – 11pm, and Sunday 12pm-10pm. Takeout is available, but delivery not yet. (Though it will be).
Tommy and I went there for dinner on Saturday night and we were very happy with what we ordered!
Big things are definitely happening in the neighborhood! It’s been announced, among many others, that Gordon Biersch, Harris Teeter, and Vida Fitness and Bang Salon will be making a footprint at the Navy Yard in the near future. Get excited!
